Hi,

We arrive in Narita on January 10 and have 3 nights booked in Tokyo, then we have 5 nights booked in Hakuba. We have 1 more night with no hotel booked on the 18th Jan and fly our from Narita at 2:55pm on 19 January.

I have just bought the 7 day rail pass and was thinking our first day of pass would be used to get from Tokyo to Hakuba. We are interested in going to Kyoto, do you think we would have enough time to head to Koyto on the 18th from Hakuba and then on the 19th head to Narita airport from Kyoto? or is this too rushed? Alternatively can we do a day trip to Kyoto from Hakuba?

Is there anything else you would suggest we could stop on the 18th for the night?

Many thanks
Sophie

Hello Sopie,

It is quite a trip from Hakuba to Kyoto, mainly because there is no direct route. If you want to make your way to Kyoto, then I would stay there at least 1 night at a minimum. That said there are plenty of great day trips closer to Hakuba.

For instance, Kanazawa this city is sometimes referred to as "mini Kyoto". It has an authentic Geisha quarter, Kanazawa castle and Kenrokuen garden (one of Japans finest gardens). It is easily reached using the Shinkansen. Other nice and easier visits would be Matsumoto and Takayama.

Also a nice option for the 18th is to travel to Hakone and stay at a local Japanese Ryokan with private onsen. To unwind before going home. With a bit of luck, you'll have a view of Fuji and, time allowing, can explore the Hakone area.

Hope this helps,
daniel
