Which JR Pass should I use? When to Activate?

Hello,
can you please let me know if I require the JR Pass for the below itinerary and which one should I use? Also, when should I activate?

Sept 2 - Arrive to Tokyo
Sept 2-6 Tokyo (with sidetrip to Nikko)
Sept 6-8 Kanazawa-Shirakawago-Takayama
Sept 8-12 Kyoto (with sidetrip to Nara)
Sept 12-14 - Hiroshima and Miyajama with side trip to Himeji
Sept 14 - Tokyo
Sept 15 - Fly home

Also, what part of this itinerary would require something other than the JR pass if I was to get one?

Hi there,

I recommend using a 14 day JR Pass here. You will do plenty of travel during your whole trip in Japan and the JR Pass would give you significant savings, compared to purchasing normal tickets. It would also cover travel from Sept 2 to Sept 15, basically covering your whole stay in Japan.

You can use the JR Pass Fare Calculator to find an approximate ticket cost of a single route or even your full itinerary.

The only part not covered is the bus to and from Shirakawago, you may also need other transport locally.
