Would it make sense for me to use the JR pass?

We are a family of two adults and two kids (aged nine and seven).

On 3 August we will be travelling from Osaka to Takayama (Shin-Osaka to Nagoya and then Nagoya to Takyama).
On 5 August we will be travelling from Takayama to Nagoya (Wide View Hida to Nagoya).
On 7 August we will be travelling from Nagoya to Hakone (Nagoya to Odawara).
On 10 August we will be travelling from Hakone to Tokyo (I don’t think the JR pass covers the Romancecar, which we were considering using).

Would you recommend the JR pass?

Hi there,

For your itinerary, purchasing individual tickets would be the more cost-effective option. However, the JR Pass does offer added convenience, as you would not need to purchase tickets for each journey separately. Instead, you would simply make seat reservations for the Shinkansen you wish to use.

If minimising costs is your priority, individual tickets are likely the better choice. If you value the flexibility and convenience of having most of your rail travel covered under a single pass, the JR Pass may still be worth considering.

I hope this helps!

Kind Regards,

Mariko
