Hi,

There is a slight change on our itinerary. We will be arriving in Nagoya on 6/22. Plan to spend a couple days there and to reserve our trains since we can't really reserve any train until we get to Japan in person.

I like to know what is the best possible or fastest way to get us from Nagoya to Sapparo/Furano. We hope to head out on Monday, 6/25. Plan to stay in Hakkaido for 3-4 days then travel back to Kyoto for our 2nd part of the journey. Also like to know the fastest way going back.

Need help on selecting the best train as the accommodation in Furano is limited and since the train is up in the air for us, I can't really reserve the room until we get there but like to have a rough idea to see if we can get there on 6/26 (if we do overnight train that is cover by the JR pass).

1) Fastest way to get from Nagoya to Furano? Which train?

2) Would it be better to stay in Sapporo, then travel to Furano?

3) Fastest way to get from Sapporo/Furano to Kyoto?

Another question is that if we reserve a train, but we missed it, is that going to be an issue?

Thanks,
J.

Hi there,

Probably the best way is to look for the Hikari to Tokyo, and then take the Hayabusa shinkansen up to Shin-Aomori and onwards in to Hokkaido. Here's sample itinerary. As Furano is another 2.5hrs from Sapporo (itinerary), so you'l probably want to stay in Sapporo overnight unless you have a very strong constitution.

Regarding reserved seats, if you miss a tran you have a reservation on there is no penalty charge.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Mari for your response. Nozomi is the only train that is not cover under JR Rail, is Hayabusa cover by JR Rail? Also, is there a way to find out what time the night train leaves? Can you help me to look for an overnight train going from Nagoya to Sapporo?

If I do the train schedule to be

Nagoya to Tokyo, then from Tokyo to Sapporo via overnight train, that's ok?

Depart Nagoya at 6pm
Pick up the overnight train in Tokyo around 9:30pm, arriving in Sapporo around 11am.
