Taking the Green(First) Class on the Shinkansen is a fantastic experience. It is much quieter and more comfortable, offering extra-wide seats for a more relaxing journey.

I totally agree with what Mariko says, you're basically buying yourself more peace and quiet during your trip around Japan.

At the same time, it also depends on your budget. For the same money, you could likely have a nice dinner somewhere or book an experience. When going for Green Class does not impact your budget, then I'd say go for it. If it does, then see what priories you have (like a nice accommodation, food, activities and similar).

Hi BranP01, my first ever Shinkansen experience was Hakata to Hiroshima on the Sakura. My booked ticket was for ordinary but when I got to my seat I thought I was in Green car by mistake,, the seat was as comfortable as my armchair at home. The seats were 2+2 but later when I got the Hikari to Osaka it was an N700 3+2 configuration with the blue seats, these were acceptable but definitely not as good as the 2+2 on the Sakura. I have an idea the Sakura may have been Green Car older stock and changed to ordinary but it didn’t look worn out.

Depends on your circumstances but if you can afford it or can make trades offs with food and accommodation go for it. I’ve booked ordinary again for my next trip but I have set money aside for one Gran Class trip to Hakodate.
