Is JR Pass sequential days or each day you use it?

Hello!
This is my first trip to Japan and I cannot find the answer to the rail pass question I have. In Europe you can get a pass like for 4 or 5 days and it is only for the days that you use the train. So you could be in Europe for a couple of weeks and only need to take the train 4 or 5 times. But it seems like the Japan Rail Pass does not do this?

We will be in Japan for 10 days. So if the ticket is only available within in a 7-day or 14-day time frame, we would need a 14-day pass? Even though we will not use it for the extra 4 days?

Or you would have to be able to compare how many times you will take the train total vs. just buying a single ticket?

Thanks for your advice! I am trying to figure this out before the price increase. We are traveling in January 2024.

Hi there,

The JR Pass is counted in consecutive days, even when you do not use it.

Kind regards,
Daniel
