I am very confused as to what type of travel pass I should purchase from the range available. Your help to understand if I should go for a full Nationwide JR Pass (and which of the 3 possibilities: 7, 14 or 21 days) or go for a combination of the different regional JR Passes mentioned under https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2357.html, I could use, would be greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone. I am really confused with the price increase that happened since last October 2023 if purchasing a nationwide JR pass is worth it. I was told it would be better to purchase regional JR passes.

I was told that the JR Sanyo Sanin Area Pass primarily covers JR trains within the Sanyo and San'in regions of Japan, which include cities like Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, Kobe, and Himeji and would allow us to take the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen as part of the Sanyo and San'in JRP to travel from Kyoto to Hiroshima. If this is correct then would you advice me to take the JR Sanyo Sanin Area 7 day pass x2 (23,000 x2 = 46,000 yen total) that would cover us for our 14 day planned travels from 28Jun-11July listed below?

28-Jun Tokyo station, you take the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen to Odawara Station (for Hakone)
28-Jun Odawara station to Hakone Tozan Railway to Gora station
30-Jun Gora station taking Hakone Tozan Railway to Odawara station
30-Jun Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen train from Odawara Station to Kyoto station
03-Jul Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen - Higashiyama Line from Kyoto station to Fujigaoka station
03-Jul Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen - Higashiyama Line from Fujigaoka station to Kyoto station
04-Jul Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen train from Kyoto station to Hiroshima station
05-Jul Take the JR Sanyo Line: Use your JR Pass to take a train from Hiroshima Station to Miyajimaguchi Station.
05-Jul and back, from Miyajimaguchi Station to Hiroshima Station with JR Sanyo Line
06-Jul Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen train from Hiroshima station to Shin-Kobe station
07-Jul Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen from Shin-Kobe station to Himeji Station
07-Jul and back, from Himeji Station to Shin-Kobe station with Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen
08-Jul Kobe Station to Arima Onsen Station, to Tanigami Station to Arimaguchi Station via Kobe Dentetsu-Arima Line
08-Jul and back, from Arimaguchi Station via Kobe Dentetsu-Arima Line to Tanigami Station to Arima Onsen Station to Kobe Station
09-Jul Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen train from Shin-Kobe station to Osaka station
10-Jul Osaka Station to Nara Station
10-Jul and back, from Nara Station to Osaka Station
11-Jul Osaka station to Tennoji station via Osaka Loop Line, to visit the Tennoji Temple
11-Jul and back, from Tennoji station via Osaka Loop Line to Osaka station

Hi there,

I think getting two Sanyo Area Passes is a great idea for your itinerary, but please note that it won't cover anything outside of the region - e.g. travel from Tokyo/Hakone.

Hope this help!
