Hi, I've put together an itinerary and was wondering:
1. What rail passes would work to get me to the various destinations?
2. Is the order of destinations best for the rail pass?
3. When should I activate the pass?
It will be our first visit to Japan, and we like to see areas well rather than cover a wider area quickly. Advice on our itinerary would be appreciated too. Regards Grant
Days 1-4 Tokyo. Day trip to Kamakura
Days 5,6 Hakone
Days 7-10 Kyoto Day/ Night trip to Himeji, Osaka
Days11,12 Nara
Days 13-15 Kanazawa
Day 16 Shirakawago
Day 17-19 Takayama
Day 20,21 Kurobe Gorge and Unazuki
Day 22 Tokyo
Day 23 Nikko
Day 24 Tokyo

Hi there,

I wouldn't recommend using rail passes for your itinerary due to the length of your trip - I would recommend looking into a Hakone FreePass for your time in Hakone, as the trains that connect Hakone to Odawara are not operated by the JR Group - the pass gives you access to this transport link as well as transport within the Hakone Area.

Kind regards,

Alexis

thanks Alex. Is it best to prebook rail tickets online before you go or just turn up on the day?

Hi there,

I'd try and book in advance where possible but as long as you're not travelling during peak tourist times of the year it's unlikely you'll have a problem booking seats on the day.

Good luck!
