Hi!

I am planning for a 9 days trip from TOKYO - OSAKA - KYOTO/NARA - TOKYO. I am torn between the activation date i should be starting to use Japan Rail - as this covers the back & forth from Narita airport to main Tokyo station. I could possible start either first day upon arrival at TOKYO, travel from to Osaka and follow by Kyoto/Nara then lastly end off at TOKYO.

My issue here, any kind souls can advise.
1) does J pass include local subway trains and local JR rail, narita express or other impt transportation like osaka/kyoto local subway?
2) how can i maximise the jr pass if i would to buy this based on preferred cities i would like to travel - tokyo, osaka, kyoto, nara in 9 days.

Thanks
Marylam

Hi Marylam,

1.) Local JR lines are included, think of the Yamanote loop line and Chuo (central) line in Tokyo, as well as many more. Other transport like the metro is not included. THe Narita Expres is also covered.

2.) Intercity travel on the Shinkansen will cost the most by far. A local trip in Tokyo will set you back 200yen or so but a one way Tokyo - Kyoto will be as much as 15.000yen. To get the best out of your JR Pass, be sure to use it on your Shinkansen and express train trips.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
