Hi,

I’ll be in japan for a total of 10 days and I’ll be arriving in tokyo haneda airport and will be staying in tokyo for 3 days(I’ll be staying in shinjuku) and thinking about going to osaka and staying there for a few days and doing a day trip to kyoto, hiroshima and nearby areas and coming back to tokyo 1 or two days before i leave. Now I’m aware that i need the JR pass to get to all of these cities and i was looking at the airport to my hotel route( in shinjuku) and it says that i have to take” tokyo monorail” and transfer to “hamamatsucho” and I’m trying to find out if the JR is going to cover for this route or if i have to use a pasmo/suica card to get to my hotel.

I’m also thinking about getting the 7 day pass since i will be staying in tokyo for the first three days and I want to know if it’s a good idea to get pasmo/ suica card and load it with money and use that to get around Tokyo( shibuya, akihabarra and to all other attractions in tokyo) instead of the jr pass so i can activate the pass when I begin my journey to osaka so that way the pass doesn’t expire( if i was to activate it the first day in japan) and having to end up spending more money for the return ticket to tokyo.

This is my first trip to japan and i would take any and all advice/suggestions.

Thank you in advance

Hi there,

Yes, the JR Pass covers the Tokyo Monorail and Yamanote line from Hamamatsucho. That said, an IC card is always good to have :)

From reading your post, I can see that you already have done your research - which is correct. So get a 7-day JR Pass for your long trips to Kyoto and Hiroshima and a Suica card for the days in Tokyo that fall outside your JR Pass.

Have a good trip!
Daniel

Thank you Daniel for your informative response. If i ship the pass it to my hotel in tokyo, how long does it normally take for the package to arrive at my hotel? I’m coming from overseas(U.S.) and I’m close to my departure (a week away) and don’t really want to risk it by shipping it here in case the shipment gets delayed on the way and wanted to ship it to where I’m staying instead.

Japan takes about 3 business days.

Kind regards,
