Hi there,

I’m planning a trip to japan, and we’re wondering if we should get a national or national JR Pass (or not at all) :)

We would like to visit these places by rail :

Tokyo > Kanazawa > Takayama > Narai-juku > Kyoto > Nara

Does the national JR pass cover all these places? Or would be better to use Regional JR pass ?

Also, could you confirm that the national JR pass includes all the green and blue lines on the map of the JR Fare calculator ?

Thank you so much in advance!

Hi there,

Yes, the JR Pass covers all these places & yes both Green (normal lines), Blue (Shinkansen) lines are covered by the Japan Rail Pass.

Will you be returning to Tokyo after Nara, or fly out elsewhere? Depending on this, I could match a pass to your trip.

Kind regards,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your answer !

After Nara, I'm thinking about discovering Yoshino valley (and Koya-san) or discover Shikoku island, before heading back to Tokyo !

If travelling by rail, it seems easier to go to Shikoku and then Okayama before going back to Tokyo. Do you think the national Pass is still relevant, or should I add a regional JR pass for those 2 regions ?

Thank you again !
Gilles

Hi Gilles,

Good idea, both Yoshino and Koya san are wonderful places to visit. Shikoku can be accessed through the Great Seto bridge, meaning you have to take the Shinkansen first to Okayama, and then a fast train to Shikoku. This can be a longer journey, than say taking the ferry from Wakayama. So check travel times ahead of time.

Kind regards,
Daniel

Thank you again for your precious help ! 🙏

Last quick question : does the national JR Pass cover the ferry between Wakayama and Tokushima ?
