Am I able to buy my son (Canadian citizenship) a JR pass to use while he is traveling with us this summer? He is on the JET program, and teaching in Japan for for a year. Does this exclude him from the qualifications for purchasing the JR pass? If he is eligible, can his pass be delivered to Japan?
JR pass for my son teaching in Japan for a year as a JET?
Hi there,
I'm afraid the Japan Rail Pass is only available for visitors to Japan who are there under a 'Temporary Visitor' visa. As the maximum length of this is 90 days it is unlikely your son has this visa and so he will not be eligible.
Sorry to be the bearer of such news, but JR are very strict about eligibility due to the savings that can be made with a JR Pass.
Thank you Mari, this is what I thought the answer would be. He is on a different visa. Do we need to obtain a "temporary visitor" visa prior to arriving in Japan, or is this done at the airport.
Hi there,
The temporary visitor visa is the standard visa you get on entry to Japan at the airport so you don't need to apply in advance.
Hope this helps!
