Hello,

We are a family of 5 (2 adult and 3 kids, 7,9,11 yro). We are planning to go to Japan with the following schedule:
June 11 - Arrived from Narita & stays in Tokyo, hotel near in Marunouchi area
June 14 - Traveling from Tokyo to Osaka, Hotel in Universal Osaka area
June 17 - Back to Tokyo, hotel in Marunouchi area
June 18 - Return home

Our concern are:
1. Which JR pass for Tokyo area since we will be visiting Tokyo Disney, Ginza area.
2. Which shinkansen line shall we take? is it only Nozomi line only for Tokyo - Osaka - Tokyo?
3. Which rail pass shall we take from Shin-Osaka to Universal area?
4. Is there a rail pass within Osaka? Is there 2 day or 3 day pass if we want to go around Osaka area?
5. Is there a Rail Pass that will cover all of this itinerary ?
6. Is there a children pass for below 11 yrs old for both train and shinkansen with reserve seat ?

Thank you for your help.

Hi there!

  1. Which JR pass for Tokyo area since we will be visiting Tokyo Disney, Ginza area.

You can buy 1 x 2 day tourist discounted metro pass upon arrival in Tokyo which will cover all your travel around Tokyo, and can purchase the 2 day metro pass with the Keisei Skyliner to get you into Tokyo from Narita with even more savings.

The other option is the [Narita Express + Suica metro prepaid card] deal. This is similar in terms of cost, but rather than 2 days of full metro cover, it gives you ¥1500 of metro and JR travel which can be used however you like (including the trip to Disney) and offers travel into Tokyo on the Narita Express rather than the Keisei Skyline train. You can also use the Suica card to purchase food from convenience stores.

I think if you're going to be in Tokyo for more than a few days, the NEX + Suica is possibly a better choice. Bear in mind that as it's a limited prepaid card (rather than infinite use day pass) it very much depends on your travel plans - break out the calculator ;).

  1. Which shinkansen line shall we take? is it only Nozomi line only for Tokyo - Osaka - Tokyo?

'Nozomi' only refers to the class of bullet train that runs on the Tokaido line from Osaka to Tokyo. Please note that the Nozomi class trains are not available to JR Pass holders. Hikari and Kodama class bullet trains also run on these lines and are valid for use with the JR Pass. Here's a sample itinerary for you.

  1. Which rail pass shall we take from Shin-Osaka to Universal area?

From Shin-Osaka to Universal Studios, you can use this route.

  1. Is there a rail pass within Osaka? Is there 2 day or 3 day pass if we want to go around Osaka area?

The JR Pass is valid for travel on JR lines in the Osaka area, but you may want to look at the 2-3 day Kansai Thru Pass which gives you unlimited travel on all metro, bus and non-JR rail services across the whole Kansai area. With this and a JR Pass you will be totally covered by public transport.

  1. Is there a Rail Pass that will cover all of this itinerary ?

As your itinerary is 8 days, there is no single rail pass that will cover your entire trip. I recommend that you take a look at the Suica card and Narita airport express single ticke deal that I mention in the answer to question 1, and also look into a 7 day rail pass starting on day 2. This will cover all your JR trips down to Osaka, around Tokyo and Osaka (eg to Kyoto), and also the trip back out to the airport on your return home. You'll also have decent metro cover while you are in Tokyo. Before you purchase the Kansai pass it's worth putting some time to thinking about the total number of trips that you will be doing while you are there before you make your purchase as it is a slightly expensive ticket if you simply intend to use it for metro services.

  1. Is there a children pass for below 11 yrs old for both train and shinkansen with reserve seat ?

Yes, all of your kids will be valid for the children price JR Pass which is 1/2 the price of the adult pass. It comes with all the same benefits as the adult pass, including seat reservations and bullet train travel. You can order these by clicking the "Child tickets (6-11 years old)" tab on our pricing page.

Hope this helps!
