I would appreciate guidance to help us decide which pass to purchase and whether to buy the 7 day or 14 day pass. Below is our itinerary:

March 21 -23 Osaka (arrive KIX)
March 23: travel from Osaka to Kyoto
March 23-April 5 based in Kyoto, with day trips March 29-April 4 to Hiroshima, Nara, Kobe, Amanohashidate, Nagoya, and Kurashiki
April 5-12 based in Tokyo, with day trips to several of the following: Yokohama, Hayakawa, Nikko, Sawara, Kanazawa, Shiakawa-no-sato, Takayama, Kofu, Chiba, Mito

We will not have time to see all of these places, but plan to take day trips by train while based in Kyoto and Tokyo. Your advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there,

I think your best bet would be a 7-day JR Pass. Make sure you include the one way Kyoto - Tokyo in it, and then try to cover as many expensive long day trips with it as well.

By that I mean trips like Hiroshima, Nagoya and Kurashiki from Kyoto and Nikko, Kanazawa, Takayama and such from Tokyo.

You could also do Kyoto - Nagoya - Takayama - Kanazawa - Tokyo to save some travel time.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
