Do we need the 7 or 14 Day JR pass?

Hi there!
I would appreciate some help whether I should buy the 7/14 day JR pass.

We arrive at Narita on the 22nd March and will fly directly up to Sapporo to go skiing in Niseko for 6 nights.
We then fly from Sapporo to Kansai on 28th March where we will start to use the trains.

28th March - Train from Kansai airport to Kyoto ( 5 nights)
2nd April- Train Kyoto to Hiroshima (2 nights,including a ferry trip to the shrine)
April 4th- Train from Hiroshima to Narita village (1 night )
April 5th- To airport by train or shuttle bus from hotel.

We will therefore be using trains for 9 days,although I guess we won't need the train on the last day as we can get the hotel shuttle bus to the airport.

We are 2 adults and one child (9 year old) and my husband would prefer to go first class,I think this is unnecessary!

All hotels and flights are booked,just need a little extra help,please.

Hi Amanda,

I think it would make most sense economically to buy a 7 day rail-pass for this journey. You could start using it on the 30th of March thru to the 5th of April. It would mean buying tickets from Kansai Airport to Kyoto, these are about 2000~ Yen by Local train or 3000Yen~ by express train (half price for children). From here though, you would have all your travel covered including your last day to the airport.

When you are in Kyoto you could use to pass as well for a day trip to Osaka, Nara or even Himeji. Also I think it is a great idea to spend you last day in Narita, this way you will have a much more relaxed journey on the day of your departure from Japan.

To the matter of first class (Green class). 2nd class travel by train in Japan in what in many countries already would be considered first class. Then again you will be spending a decent amount of hours in the train so it is very understandable if you would want the extra luxury and space. Of course it depends on the person but I think you will be fine in 2nd class or normal seats as they call it in Japan.
