7 day pass flexible for 11 days in Japan?

Dear Daniel San,

May I please ask for your advice on which JR pass to buy? We arrive in Tokyo on Friday, Oct 4.

Question1: We will explore Tokyo Saturday, but may need to use the subway. Does the pass work on the subway?

We will use the train to go to Kamakura on Sunday, October 6th. Tuesday, October 9, we will go to Kyoto for 3 days. One day we will go to Nara, perhaps Osaka, but not sure how much trouble that will be.

We return by train on Friday to Tokyo and fly out Saturday. It is a total of 11 days. Do you think it will be worth it to buy the 14 day rail pass? Once you start using a 7 day pass, if we take some days off, does that mean it can last longer? What is your advice for a pass?

Dear Emily,

1.) The Tokyo Metro is not included but you can use the local JR Network in Tokyo to reach many area's in Tokyo.

2.) My advice would be to use a 7 day Japan Rail Pass for travel to Kyoto and back to Tokyo. These are the most expensive trips of your travel plan and where you will make the best savings using the JR Pass. Then try to fit in some side travel, like to Nara, Kamakura and perhaps a one way to the airport and the JR Pass will be of great value. Do keep in mind that the JR Pass is counted in consecutive days, once you start it, it will keep counting down - even if you do not use it.
