Sleeper trains reservations

Yes, your friend will be able to make a reservation before you get to Japan. I recommend they visit an actual JR ticket office, or call the JR-West Odekake ticketline or JR-East Ekinet ticketline to do this as online services (such as Eki-net can often have patchy coverage of the sleeper services.

My japanese friend tried to make the reservation in the madoguchi but they said to her that the reservation can only be made by the JR Pass owner (I want to take these trains alone). That the only way is to do it when I arrive at Narita and exchange the pass, but with the risk that there will be no vacant seats.

As I really want to take these seats, do you think that there is another option to make the reservation? As you said, how can she really make the reservation for me?

Hi Victor,

I'm not officially recommending it, but I have heard of people reserving in Japan and then refunding/rebooking the reservation on the sleeper once you get to Japan with JR Pass. You should check on any refund conditions before you attempt this as I've never tried it in person.
