Hi Team,

Good Day to you!

Just a few questions on the usage of the JR pass:

  1. Can the 7, 14 or 21 day length passes be used on the following:
    (a) Tokaido Shinkansen (for either Nozomi/ Hikari/ Kodama trains), (b) Tokyo JR Rail, and (c) Osaka JR Rail?

  2. Is it advisable to purchase the passes online or on the spot?

  3. I will be arriving Narita Airport on 22/07/16 @ 10.45am. How do I get to Osaka at the shortest time?

  4. Do you provide an updated train schedule/ frequency (for July 2016) online?

Thank you and hope to hear from you soon!

Regards,
Patricia (Singapore)

Hi Patricia,

Thank you for contacting us.

1.) The JR Pass is valid on the Tokaido Shinkansen with Hikari/Nozomi trains, Tokyo JR network and also all local JR lines in Osaka.

2.) It is not possible to buy the JR Pass in Japan, please place an order online here.

3.) You can use the JR Pass from Narita Airport to Tokyo station and from there use the Hikari Shinkansen to Osaka. This route takes about 5 hours.

4.) You can find the latest train schedules via www.hyperdia.com

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your information. However, I still have some doubts on the usage of the passes.

1) Is there any extra cost/ top up required for taking Nozomi trains?
Since this train takes a shorter time to reach Osaka.

2) Online seats reservation required for either Hikari or Nozomi trains?

3) What if I missed the scheduled train, what can I do in order to hop on to the next available train?

4) Can I purchase the pass today and use it in July/ August?

Thks!
