Confusion with JR pass, where it can be used.

Hello,

I am travelling to Japan on the 20th May 2019 and need to buy a Japanese rail ticket. However I am confused.

This is my itinerary: Tokyo (6 days) - Kyoto (3 days) - Tanabe. Then I will do a 3 day Kumano trail before travelling from Kii-Katsurra to Osaka (3 days) incl. a visit to Mount Koya and then back to Tokyo.

  • Can I use the JR pass to get from Kyoto to Tanabe, from Kii-Katsurra to Osaka and then from Osaka to Koya, or will I have to buy additional tickets?

Finally, can you use the Japanese rail pass on Tokyo's underground/metro system? The information online is not clear. I think you can use it on some lines? If so which! I will be in Japan for 15 days which a lot of long distance travelling which means I think the JR pass is the best option.

Any help would be much appreciated,

Hi Yasmin,

Can I use the JR pass to get from Kyoto to Tanabe, from Kii-Katsurra to Osaka and then from Osaka to Koya, or will I have to buy additional tickets? The short answer is yes, you will have to buy addition tickets for part of these routes. You can find details on how to access the Kumano Kodo here.

The JR Pass can be used on any local JR line, but not the metro/subway system. You can get an idea of lines covered on our JR Map.

I would use a 7-day JR Pass for your trip if you can cover the return to Tokyo within its return itinerary.
