Is there a pass we should buy, which sections are best buying locally? Do we order our pass before leaving Australia?
The itinerary as follows:
Kansai airport to Osaka
Osaka to Kyoto
Kyoto to Nara
Nara to Hakone
Hakone to Tokyo and then airport

For travel around Kansai, you could look at using a Kansai Area Pass or Kansai Area Wide Pass. These passes are delivered by e-mail, so you can order almost anywhere.
For travel to Hakone, it would be best to buy normal tickets.

Nara to Hakone appears to be a difficult route. Any helpful advice on minimising how long it takes and the number of changes?
