Does the 7 day rail pass:
- cover you for 7 days from the first day of travel or
- cover you for 7 specific days of travel? ie. I will be in Japan for 15 days, but will travel/use the pass on 6 days out of those 15 days

It will cover you for 7 consecutive days - the first option you stated.
