Yes, a JR Pass would cover all these trips. It's also easy to visit Himeji and the castle in a few hours as stopover.

Activating the JR Pass on the 18th would indeed mean that Sept 24th is your last day of validity (or day 8). Consider taking a late train back on the 24th.

Follow up question on the day trip to Hiroshima from Kyoto. I've read something recently that suggested that doing a round trip from Kyoto to Hiroshima with a stop in Himeji, in one day, can be a very long and rushed day. Does that sound right?
