7 or 14 days JR pass? And Itinerary check for a 14 days Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka-Tokyo trip

Hi

I will be touring Japan in about 3 weeks’ time! I desperately need some help with my tentative itinerary and JR pass details.

2 June Reach Tokyo in the morning
3 June Tokyo
4 June Hakone
5 June Kyoto
6 June Kyoto
7 June Nara
8 June Osaka
9 June Osaka
10 June Hiroshima
11 June Miyajima
12 June Tokyo
13 June Tokyo
14 June Tokyo (Disneyland)
15 June Tokyo
16 June Leave Tokyo in the morning

  1. JR Pass: I am on a budget and I am wondering if I should buy a 7 or 14 days JR pass. Currently, I plan to spend 8 days outside Tokyo (4-11 June). Should I combine Hiroshima and Miyajima visit into 1 day so that I can come back to Tokyo on 11 June with the 7 day JR pass? Or should I make the Hakone trip a day trip from Tokyo and activate the JR pass for the Kyoto-Osaka-Hiroshima leg?

  2. Hiroshima and Miyajima: This is similar to the previous question: Is it possible to tour Hiroshima and Miyajima in 1 day?

  3. Hakone: Which is the most cost effective way to enjoy the Mount Fuji sights? Day trip to Hakone? Stop by Hakone on the way to Kyoto? Do we need to spend 1 night at Hakone?

  4. Disneyland: Which days of the week is the best to visit Disneyland? The least crowded day?

Thanks for all your help!

Hi Wendy,

Wow, nice trip! Here are some thoughts:

  1. I think I'd plan on spending more time in Tokyo at the start - say 5 days? This way you can recover from travel in a very 24 hour city and... you can do a overnight trip to Hakone using the Hakone Free Pass (2 days of travel all the way up to Hakone from Shinjuku for ¥5000). You can still aim to visit Disney at the end of your trip. I think that's a great idea

  2. Assuming you use the Hakone free pass at the start of your trip with an overnight stay in Hakone, I think you will be good to use a 7 day rail pass for your travels, making even more savings possible.

  3. I think I'd ideally stay overnight at Miyajima. Hiroshima is a nice city, but is more interesting to explore in the daytime. 1 night at Miyajima would be great.

  4. Disneyland is pretty busy during the summer months, however you can bet on less crowds by visiting towards the start of the week (Mon-Wed), provided your visit does not coincide with any Japanese national holidays.

Hope this helps!

Hi Mari

Thanks for your help. It is amazing how you are helping everyone!

I will probably skip the Hiroshima/Miyajima leg. Since it is my first trip to Japan, I think I would spend more time in Tokyo and Kyoto. And maybe spend one night at Hakone.

Hi Wendy,

No problem at all :)

Good idea about the Hiroshima trip, and if you did fancy a change of scene while are in Kyoto you can always pop down there for a day trip (same with Himeji etc).

Have a great trip!

Hi Mari

Just to check with you again. If I decide to go to Hiroshima/Miyajima, is it possible to use the JR pass to get from Miyajima to Hakone to enjoy the Mt Fuji views? And after that, use the JR pass to go back to Tokyo from Hakone?

Hi there,

For Hakone the JR Pass will get you most of the way as far as Odawara. From Odawara you will need to purchase non-JR tickets (or an Odakyu Hakone Free Pass to get you up and down from the Hakone area. Once you are back to Odawara you can use the rail pass to continue your travel up to Tokyo.

Hope this helps!
