Hi there,
You're passport will need to have a valid "Temporary Visitor" visa. Most visitors will receive this upon arrive. This is the only kind of visa that qualifies the user for the Japan Rail Pass.
You will not be able to use the JR Pass, should you enter Japan using your APEC BTC and not receive a Temporary visitor visa.
