Hi there,
A 7 day JR Pass might be a good option for you here. The cost of a 7 day JR Pass is similar to the cost of a return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto. Add a little more travel to it, such as travel to/from Narita Airport and you are already making savings using the JR Pass.
